Subterranean was such a guilty pleasure I couldn’t help but indulge in another Rollins’ novel in short succession. I’m glad I did, too :)

Rollins writes in a way that constantly keeps the reader engaged. There is always some question that he naturally leads one to ask just before changing gears to another protagonist’s story. He keeps you guessing, but delivers all: that’s the greatest pleasure of his novels – he sets up a million questions and resolves everything.

Despite the typical military involvements in his works, however, they don’t end up like a typical hacker/slasher movie, where everybody but the lead guy/girl and their romantic interest survive. What’s surprising to me is how he can get so many characters to survive despite the oppressive conditions and abuse he plunges them in. He also has a knack for making the reader think their favorite characters are dead only to discover several chapters later that through some unaccounted circumstance, absent from another character’s perspective, they live and provide assistance.
