Rainlendar’s got a Mac version, and I didn’t know about it until LifeHacker mentioned Rainlendar as their number one calendar application. Looks like Rainlendar’s got every platform covered now, with Windows first, Linux second, and finally the Mac OS X frontier. Looks like I’ve got some skinning to do!

Short tutorial on my method for creating a faded smeary reflection using Photoshop CS3. Same method should work for earlier versions of Photoshop. This technique contrasts with “Apple-style” reflections, which are sharp and crisp, instead creating a short simple reflection that’s not as distracting.

This is part 2 of a 3-part series in which we’ll be generating a super-glossy shape, sticking a super-shiny dent in it, and then creating a luminous gem in the dent for a 3D UI feel. Part II demonstrates the creation of smooth dent on the surface of the glassy object using multiple shines, some layer-styles and a Gaussian blur filter. Tutorial requires Photoshop CS3 and makes generous use of layer-styles. (YouTube)

Remember when footers in websites used to be tiny text with links to XHTML and CSS validation and some legal disclaimers? It seems lately that more and more sites are switching a decent chunk of site navigation to expanded, multi-column footers. They range from banal, minimalistic, functionalist (musiciansfriend.com) to highly graphical. In many cases the footer becomes a graphical signature of equal importance to the site headers at the top (webdesignerwall.com and blog.spoongraphics.co.uk, notably), stylistic punctuation to your browsing experience.

Generating images that tile easily by using Photoshop is a time-consuming process, no matter which method you use. Corel’s Painter X, although geared for traditional-media artists, contains a fantastic tile-making tool that could not be easier to use. Here’s how to do it.

Creating radial symmetry of rotated and aligned objects is a cinch in Photoshop, if you’re restricted to 90° angles. Illustrator’s the way to go for these kinds of things, but if you’ve just got Photoshop, here’s how you can mimic the effect easily.

Haxer gave me the great idea of committing tutorials to video + audio for your learning benefit, so here’s my first: a tutorial on how to use layer knockouts (both Shallow and Deep knockouts) in Photoshop CS3. This technique works as far down as version 7.0, however.

This tutorial seeks to emulate the effect generated by my Wires and Splines Tutorial using a SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED method. Where my previous technique involved multiple copying and pasting events to render layer-styles on individual layers and then merge them down, this technique will use three layers total, no copying and pasting required! In my experience, mastering this technique reduces interweaving-layer production time by at least half.

Hey! What happened to days 9-26? Haha! I betcha think I haven’t been productive – Truth is I’ve been crackin’ down on 2 AstonShell themes. When the inspiration takes you, you gotta do it. Regardless, I’ve still got hand-drawn, computer-rendered, and musical sketches I’ve been chuggin’ out. Just need to scan, record, upload, and flesh out a blurb for each.
This little goober was made as an experiment with the freeware program ContextFree – kinduv a fractal-esque type program with INCREDIBLE potential (if you can get by the rather tacky syntax requirements). The trees were all rendered in ContextFree and then the background, blurring, perspective, shadows, styles, etc… were done in Photoshop CS3. I present here the wallpapers in multiple resolutions for your enjoyment (if you enjoy it).
