Temporary Graphics...
« on: May 04, 2007, 12:39:57 PM »

I got a temporary under construction page going at haxer.skinyourscreen.com. I haven't really had time to work on my home page much, but I figured that I would at least put something up there so people would see something. That was an awkward sentence, lol. Anywho, thanks to mrbiotech for gettingthat set up for me. Now all I have to do is make a good site. Oh ya, and thanks to nerio for the suggestion that I get my own website. Cheesy With out that nudge I would still be strictly using my dA site. Soon, I can branch away from that almost entirely. You guys are great.

Ugh, I didn't realize that for some reason there is a password on haxer.sys... So you guys can't see it. I'll have to consult with mrbiotech on that.

Password-protection of the folder has been removed.  Everybody can now see the dang-cool intro graphics ("under construction page") that Haxer's put together.

BTW, Haxer, I renamed the index file to an HTML file, since there wasn't any dynamic PHP code in it.  Hope you didn't mind Smiley

No problem, I just had it named php because the original one that I replaced was named php. Grin

And thanks again. Smiley

threat revival...

Anyway, thought I would let you guys know that I am busy working on my site (thanks again Rich) now that I have got Photoshop installed and recovered a lot of lost data from my screwed HD. I added a link at the bottom of the construction page that I built for my internet programming class. It has the sort of metal feel that I will be going for in the finished site. Colors will change, to fit the background better, so if you can't see the links very well, don't worry. Once I get it up i will need you guys to let me know if there are things that you can't make out or read very well. I want a number of people with differently calibrated monitors to let me know what they see. So check it out.

Looks cool, but the page size is irritating for people who use a 1024 wide resolution ( a poll on Skinbase found that about 60% use that resolution ) meaning that you have to keep scrolling back & forth sideways to read it. Notice how your link to 'Internet Programming Page' then takes it down to a 1024 res. ~ so it is inconsistent.
The only other thing I woulld suggest Chris is that you open external links in a new tab/blank page. You want to keep your page open for visitors, not make them have to click back to it from external links that you have provided for them.

How do I set it to open the external links in a new tab? I have never done that before.

Also, I changed the image size to use percentages so it fits on your screen better. It looks gay though. However, that initial page is one that I made on the fly to get something in the provided space. The end site will be consistent and look good as well. Thanks a lot for the advice.

Another thought is to use the % value so that your page automatically resizes to a visitors browser... I've never bothered with it because all the headers I've used wouldn't have worked as expandable images, but it might work for you.

It's a simple piece of code using CSS, there's a page here that explains in detail how to do it ~ http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=webdesign&seqNum=279&rl=1

Ah, the CSS % is cool, I will have to play around with that and use source code from cool sites as a reference. Thanks, as always you guys have been very helpful.

at your place Haxer, i would use a simple navbar that shows temporarly some buttons and in the center of the screen something saying that the page is still under construction ......this will ease the navigation in the temp site until you make something to work with...

What'd you say Rich ??!!

Hmm.. good question Smiley

I've been putting together a Tutorial Series called Standard-Compliant Web Design For Dummies like mrbiotech to tally my own experiences learning standards-compliant design principles.  Maybe I'll get workin' on it quick so Haxer can put together a site that'll rely on web-coding instead of the giant image.

It's not even worth learning table-based web-design: you gotta jump right into XHTML/CSS to avoid getting laughed at these days.  It's always easier in hind-sight, I s'pose.

I'll be posting another XHTML/CSS open-source template within the week.  Maybe it can be the example.
