CorelDRAW, any good?
« on: September 28, 2006, 08:28:08 PM »

I've been getting a lot of offers from Corel lately, and admittedly I'm surprised at how competitive some of their prices are in relation to other graphics packages.  I know that Paul Boyer (Mormegil) of StarDock fame swears by it exclusively (prefers it to all others).  Do any of you guys use this, and what are your thoughts on it?

Paul's tutorials make it seem really slick, but any expert makes their specialty look easy (that's why they're experts, I suppose).

Although a Mac-lover, I'll have to use Windows for a particular endeavor.  Just considering options.  I really like Pixel, but it's been so unstable for me.

Smiley True, my friend.  True.

I've tried GiMP several times over the years but could never get past the cruddy gradient editor.  Takes me as long to make a gradient in GiMP as creating a whole Rainlendar skin in Photoshop.

As a student, I can get wicked sweet deals on Corel Products.  Adobe also offers student discounts, but even with them the price is still pretty steep.

I'm happy to see Mac prices dropping.  You can now get a pretty decent Apple laptop (their MacBook line) for a little over $1000.

Of course, with an academic discount the prices are even better, but then you're only allowed to purchase one a year.  For instance, with academic discount the midrange MacBook comes out to about $1200.  And it's a great computer with a fantastic operating system.  You can install Windows on it, too, and actually have both operating systems running simultaneously with little performance loss using parallels.  Tre cool!

Wish I had the money to buy a computer for you!  Us poor grad students make meager earnings, however.  Don't even have a PC of my own anymore since the wife sold the Toshiba.

A Mac will always stay on my mind till i get one, then i'll make all tests i need .....till its composents jump over the window LOL Grin Cheesy Afro Evil
