Vai - definitely Vai!     Passion and Warfare was aptly named, and still stands as a musical monument in my mind (not to diminish the other incredible players).

Although I GREATLY admire the player, as well as his miraculous teacher, Satriani, I've always questioned their use of Ibanez guitars.  Although their Wizard and Wizard II necks feel great in the hand, the componentry and construction have always been issues to me.  Granted, on a custom, one-of-a-kind guitar made as a sponsorship deal Ibanez would produce its best products.  By-and-large, though, I've despised Ibanez's consumer-grade guitars since I first played a few in the early '90s.  Generally decent pickups, an okay trem, bad tuners, and inferior woods.  I've seen a number of Ibanez guitars that people have stripped the paint from to put on a custom color or paint job and the body woods literally had 1-inch gaps in the wood filled with Bondo!

Haha that's great. My friend likes Ibanez. I don't know why though since his current one has a pickup in it that is halfway falling out.

That's astounding! but I suspect that a lot of "off the shelf" guitars are lashed together, especially those that are produced in the far east. The reason I had trouble reseating the neck of my Encore is due to the fact that there is a ruddy great gap between the heel and the neckblock ( it's a glued construction, not a bolted one ). One of these days I'm gonna have to scarf a new piece onto the heel to make up the difference.
I was really disappointed when I discovered that Michel Chavarria of Lag guitars had recently moved the bulk of his production to Korea... bye bye Lag!

With the exception of kits or unfinished parts, I've made a personal policy of only getting guitars where I can see the wood.  I think it's important to check the wood inside the pickup cavity as well (if possible).  I was repairing an Epiphone Les Paul for a friend, and when I pulled the pickups out it became evident that the body itself was composed of alternating layers of particle-board wood (like what they build cheap home flooring out of) and some thin multi-ply stuff.  I was wondering why the upper register of the instrument sounded so dead before taking it apart - surprise surprise!  The top wood on the guitar was mostly visible through the thickly applied red-burst paint-job, but the sides were opaque.  Never would have known what wonders lie beneath!

I like Epiphone's hollow-bodied guitars quite a bit, though.  That's my next goal.  I used to have a 12-string hollow-body electric by a brand named Trump that sounded incredible!  Gave it to my younger brother when I bought my first B.C. Rich - that was a mistake.  I start donating plasma next week to save pennies for one of these.

Put me down for a penny a week... I just tinker with the fretboard Rich, you seem to make it some sort of destination.... ( bears out what I was saying earlier though )...
