They're both similar to NeoMail - just online email clients.  Horde is nice because of its features but SLOWWWW!!!

You can host six websites, eh? :p

As soon as our system administrators at JCU get around to fixing up the firewall borkage on caradoc.jcu.edu.au, I'll have that, but at the moment that domain name points to an entirely different server which is squatting on our officially assigned IP (it's a pain in the ass, because caradoc is where we host IRC and our files via scp/sftp.) And when it does come up, i have to watch my back wrt caradoc being an officially sanctioned JCU website concordant to the code of internet conduct and bleh. Very convenient for me though, because I have root on that box and I can set up anything I please Smiley

The University of Utah (where I attend) gives a microbial amount of web-space, something like 10megs, no PHP, no MySQL, although they do allow PERL.  Definitely not enough, though.  Went with MidPhase at first and when they started dropping the number of MySQL databases we could have and eliminated FTP/SSH access I jumped ship for Site5.

Lovin' Site5!  They're really a pleasure to work with!  Rather than taking away the stuff I wanted most at MidPhase, Site5 has really catered to my needs.  In addition, their down-time is reduced by a factor of 10 (by my calculations) and their backups via FlashBack are incredibly easy.  Don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but my web-host RAUX!

I'm a bit spoiled. In the time i've actually been doing web programming, i've actually owned all my server boxes (i.e. had root access) and been able to do whatever I want, sometimes with amusing consequences (mkswap /dev/hda1 because I forgot to make a swap partition at install - oops! Bai linux install!) Rebooting remote machines is always hairy too :p

Also, no ssh-scp/rsync on a remote box would make me sad in the pants. FTP is such a crappy file transfer protocol in so many ways it really isn't funny at all (disclaimer : perceptions modified by misconfigured FTP-caused wipe of two weeks work). At last check, there's no nice way to sync to an FTP server by uploading only changed files, without resorting to various crap like special FTP uploaders and having Dreamweaver keep track of what's changed.

Oh, and you should see some webhosting deals i've gandered at - servage.net (ridiculous amounts of storage/bandwidth, slightly iffy reliability and reputation depending on who you talk to) and nearlyfreespeech.net, which is like pre-paid internet hosting (which is what I'm looking at getting for myself, as soon as I turn 18 and I can get paypal and all that. darnation to whoever set 18 as the legal age for so many things.)

Been meanin' to figure out rsync one of these days, just haven't gotten around to it, yet.

I've had a number of what I would consider "developmental" server boxes, some were even live to the net, but I try and keep a fairly reputable web-host simply so I don't have to deal with so many behind-the-scenes things.  I'd rather not mess with setting up my own DNS and postfix, etc....  Still, if one can handle it, by all means Smiley
