So in effect..
« on: October 10, 2006, 08:08:45 PM »

...Rich, having this site online has been costing you a bundle of dosh? and in view of fact that only a handful of us still come here... why waste the money?

The few of us that want to retain this caring, sharing use of graphical skills can devote a page or two of our homesites to share those skills with others ( though I beg to question what anyone ever learnt from me ).

We just link to each other, and share a database of zips that are relevant to the size of our ISP's allowance.

Sort of Ninja tuts!

I dunno, it's just one of my many zany thoughts...

I've debated turning SYS off for a while, bantering the idea here and there.  I guess the principle reason I haven't is because of gratitude to a group of friends who have contributed skins, tutorials, and conversation.  By keeping SYS up and running their contributed material stays up and public.

There's also a bunch of tutorial sites that have links to our tutorials... kinduv neat that our tuts are linked to by the larger tutorial aggregation sites Smiley

Interesting suggestion, you propose still.  I really like the idea of creating our own little ring of tuts, linked to each other.  Let's keep exploring this option.

But first...
Here's a little peek into the back-end of SYS affairs and mrbiotech's thoughts:

I've recently purchased hosting through another web-host that gives me the ability to run 6 complete sites from one account (that's 6 entirely separate domains).  I did this principally to get access to a Ruby-On-Rails enabled webhost for another web-business startup.  The package actually costs less per month than the current host of SYS, so I'll probably switchover within the next few months.  The big problem is the domain name, Skinyourscreen.  I might have to go .net or .org since the current webhost is notoriously stingy in coughing up any domain-names used through their services.

what a sad community even for best seller skinners that come here along the time.....but all what you said micke is true....
i wished to participate even with a small doshes....but as you know, i lost everything at once, but still keep faith that all will be well Cheesy

Don't worry, we're not closing the doors anytime soon.  I've still gotta polish up the front-page, right Wink ?

I've got four tutorials in progress and two podcasts.  One podcast has already been recorded, it's just awaiting final mix-down, and the other exists merely as links and a script.  I need to get on the ball.

At least the site-upgrades are completed.  That was my pre-eminient worry.  Not only did we upgrade the forum software, the main-site software, and the podcast software, but all the sites were digitally moved from web-hosting company to another.  Transfered the domain name and everything.

It's a bit of peace of mind for myself, anyway- the last webhost had very patchy connections to their MySQL databases and services that grew in terms of hard-drive space for hosting but shrunk in more critical aspects, like the size and number of databases that could be used.  Eventually their services came at too much of a performance hit to continue using.  The host that now hosts the site does it for almost $2 cheaper per month, gives me the same size of hosting, better bandwidth, SSH, SSL, dedicated IP, and 6 whole domains, as opposed to 1.  Plus, I've now got a live environment to put Ruby-On-Rails projects on.

So far more secure.  All the software upgrades are probably more important to security than the web-host, per se.

Oops...

I'm really sorry 'bout that.  I've got backups made of all email accounts previous to the new web-host if you need to get anything.  I'll hook you up with a new account right now and then IM you the password.

Should look exactly the same as it did on the old host, minus NeoMail (now Horde and SquirrelMail are the only options).
